Mamook Tokatee - “to make beautiful”
This 56-unit development is the second project in the Cully neighborhood and is co-owned by Native American Youth and Family Center and by Community Development Partners.
Mamook Tokatee invites a new way of thinking about home, creativity, and community. Its name, drawn from Chinook Wawa, means “to make beautiful,” and that intention is felt throughout every space. Created through partnership with the Native American Youth and Family Center, Community Development Partners, and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, this community rises in Northeast Portland as both a response to displacement and a vision for what comes next.
Here, art is not an addition. It is a foundation. Mamook Tokatee was designed with Native artists and creators in mind, offering spaces where making, sharing, and storytelling are part of everyday life. An on site studio and gallery create opportunities for residents to shape culture in real time, while gathering spaces welcome connection across generations. The result is a place where creativity strengthens identity and builds community from within.
The design draws inspiration from the cedar plank houses of the Pacific Northwest, reimagined for a contemporary urban setting. Natural materials, strong structural rhythms, and a careful balance of light and texture create a building that feels both grounded and open. Inside, artwork by Native artists brings stories into hallways, shared spaces, and homes, creating an environment that feels deeply connected to place and culture.
Homes are designed to support a wide range of lives, from individuals to families, with layouts that feel both functional and inviting. Energy conscious systems help reduce costs while supporting long term sustainability. At the same time, services rooted in a holistic understanding of wellbeing connect residents to resources, education, and cultural programming that strengthen stability and opportunity.
Mamook Tokatee stands as a powerful example of what can happen when development centers culture, creativity, and community leadership. It offers a model that others can build from and a place where people can truly see themselves reflected in the spaces they inhabit. It is not just about where you live. It is about how a place can help you create, connect, and thrive.
