Vote No on Washington State Ballot Initiatives 011, 638 and 645

The Native American Youth and Family Center (NAYA) stands in strong opposition to Washington State Ballot Initiatives 001, 638, and 645 on the November 3rd election. These measures are in direct opposition to NAYA’s mission and programs focused on uplifting youth and families. Initiatives 001 and 638 would increase the risk of harm to all youth, particularly Two Spirt and LGBTQIA+ youth.
Initiative 001 would threaten the privacy and safety of 2SLGBTQIA+ students and remove common sense school record protections for abuse victims. School counselors would be forced to reveal the details of their conversations with students to parents, regardless of whether the child is suffering abuse at home. It would remove schools as a safe space for students who don’t have supportive home environments.
Initiative 638 aims to ban trans girls from girls’ sports and could put all girls at greater risk of harm by imposing unnecessary and invasive medical exams to play sports. To play for a school sports team, all girls could be subjected to an invasive medical exam. This would create a huge barrier for all girls interested in playing sports, and it could also place them in extremely unsafe, vulnerable, and harmful situations.
Initiative -645 is an attempt to repeal a law already passed that would 9.9% tax people making more than $1 million in income a year. The result would jeopardize billions in funding for public education and childcare, eliminate free school meals for many students, and increase costs for healthcare and taxes on lower-earning workers and small businesses.
When Native parents came together to create NAYA more than 50 years ago, they did it to support ALL youth, including our Two Spirit, Indigiqueer and LGBTQ youth. Two-Spirit, Indigiqueer, and LGBTQ individuals are celebrated and revered within our community. It’s why NAYA has always felt like home to me as a Two Spirit, Indigenous person.
