Daniel: ECA Graduate, College Student
Daniel Pavia-Herrera, Klamath & Shoshone, graduated from the Early College Academy in 2014. Daniel has been involved at NAYA for years, but began facing challenges in his schooling and took some time away. But thanks to our Summer Ascend Credit Recovery Program, Daniel was able to gain credits and catch back up. After his successful summer, he became fully reengaged and decided to enroll in NAYA’s private, culturally-inspired high school. After attending 5 other high schools, Daniel came to the ECA looking for the individual support that he needed to overcome barriers and finish his graduation requirements. And he was not disappointed. Youth Advocacy Manager Nykke Straws says of his success, “Daniel advocated for himself to be in a more challenging class over the summer. He is respectful to teachers and students and is engaged in class.” Daniel earned the credits he needed to be back on track to graduate.
Daniel’s mother, Delores Burgos, is proud of her son’s accomplishments. The public school system didn’t work for their family. “The real success for Daniel is that he graduated on time. We never thought he would get that far. We went through five other high schools trying to find the right fit. He was a NAYA kid for almost nine years, so to have him come to the ECA was perfect. He got the attention he needed. They had the time for him and showed that they cared whether he passed or not. That is something that we hadn’t experienced before, especially with his background of suspensions and office visits. His last school used to have me on speed dial they called me so much. NAYA helped him to really find that self-reliance he needed to succeed.”
Today, Daniel is a student at Portland Community College, studying Business and Administration.
NAYA’s Early College Academy works because we teach culture. Being connected to tradition encourages our youth to give back to the community materially and culturally. The annual ECA Luncheon is Wednesday April 8th at 11:30am here at NAYA. The Luncheon supports the success of our students as they grow, learn, and find their path.
