Positive Indian Parenting: Choices in Parenting

June 18, 2019 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Positive Indian Parenting is an eight week course focusing on traditional and culturally specific parenting practices and values. We will explore attitudes in a variety of traditional child-rearing ways and apply them to values and challenges of modern parenting skills.

Session 8: Choices in Parenting

This session is designed to help parents explore the things that Indian parents face today. It addresses the question “What makes it hard to be an Indian parent?” Parents are asked to examine again where they have learned to be a parent, the circumstances in which they now parent, the special problems faced by Indian children in today’s world, and the cultural issues parents face in parenting. Further, they are asked to determine what kind of parent they want to be. It is time to look realistically at the job of parenting, the limits and frustration, and then to set some goals for themselves.

In this session parents will learn:

  • about the things Indian parents face today
  • to understand the unique challenges that Indian children face today in growing up; and
  • to recognize that positive Indian parenting can help children meet those challenges
  • how to begin to make choices about what kind of parenting they want to use, and what kind of parenting they want their children to use.

Dinner and childcare are provided.
