Calling Washington County Native Americans for September 30 Focus Group
In 2010 NAYA participated in a research project conducted by the Coalition of Communities of Color. This project produced the report many are familiar with called Native Americans in Multnomah County: An Unsettling Profile. Our community has been using the data contained in this report to advocate for positive change. Participants in the Portland Indian Leaders Roundtable have presented the findings detailed in the report to Portland City Council, the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners, Metro Council, various funders, and the community. They did this all to promote a reduction in disparities that impact the quality of life for our families.
This year, the Coalition of Communities of Color has invited NAYA to participate in a sister effort dedicated solely to Native Americans living in Washington County. We have focused on Multnomah County in the past, and want to take advantage of this opportunity to expand our reach and lift up another community’s voice. With the goal of listening thoughtfully and carefully to what our community has to share, NAYA’s Community Engagement team will be hosting a focus group in Washington County on September 30, from 9 AM to 2:30 PM, to hear from community members living in Washington County. (Here is a map of Washington County.) The information gathered will be shared back with the focus group participants to ensure accuracy. There will be childcare available, lunch provided, and $125 for participants’ time. Your input could lead to a better quality of life for our community!
If you live in Washington County and would like to contribute to the discussion or would like additional information please contact Cary Watters at caryw@nayapdx.org or call 503-288-8177 ext. 331. RSVPs requested by September 15 so we can ensure adequate food and support.
