Culture Night – #MMIW
May 1, 2019 @ 5:30 pm - 9:00 pm
This event is sponsored by City of Portland, Multnomah County, Metro Regional Government, NAYA Family Center, Native Wellness Institute, PSU Institute for Tribal Governance, and The Old Church Concert Hall.
The #MMIW movement was born out of the alarming rate of missing and murdered Indigenous women in Canada and the United States that most often goes unnoticed. This event hopes to bring awareness of this silent epidemic to the forefront. Join advocates, family members of victims, and survivors, to learn more about this issue. This gathering of community will provide an evening of awareness and solidarity. Come and support the efforts to raise awareness of the impact of MMIW in Portland.
The event will include remarks from elected officials, Native youth from the Staying Sacred Program and Grant High School, Sergeant John Williamson of the Nez Perce Tribal Police Department, Portland Police Bureau, Educator Patsy Whitefoot of the Yakama Nation, and more.
Dinner 5:30 PM
Program 7 PM
A proclamation to honor May 5, 2019 as National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women will be formally recognized by Portland City Council on Wednesday, May 1st at 10:15am.
