Celebrating Native Women Educating and Inspiring Generations

March marks the celebration of Women’s History Month, and in 2025, the theme “Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations” honors the women who have shaped, and continue to shape, our futures through education, mentorship, and leadership. This theme resonates deeply within the Native community, especially here at NAYA, where we witness firsthand the profound impact of Native women as leaders and educators who carry forth cultural knowledge, wisdom, and empowerment.

Native women have always been at the heart of our communities, acting as the anchors that keep our traditions alive, and our families connected. Their voices pass down our stories, their mentorship guides younger generations, and their leadership nurtures our cultural roots. From those who lead our schools to teach younger generations, to those who dedicate their lives to preserving traditions, culture, and sacred teachings, Native women ensure that our communities remain strong, resilient, and rooted in the wisdom of our ancestors.

The importance of education within Indigenous communities cannot be overstated. It is through education—including sharing traditional knowledge—that Native women have empowered generations to rise above adversity. They teach our youth the value of their culture, the importance of self-determination, and the role they have in shaping a better future for the next generations.

Indigenous women have been on the frontlines of activism, pushing for educational opportunities and the preservation of Indigenous languages, which are vital to the health of our communities and even the well-being of the planet.

NAYA ensures there are ample opportunities for women to lead in the community. 86% of our LEAD program graduates are women. In 2024, 57% of participants in the Native Business Accelerator program and a majority of the entrepreneurs at our marketplace events are women and femmes.

The rise of Native women as entrepreneurs and business owners is not only a testament to their resilience and creativity but also a powerful force for economic growth, community empowerment, and the creation of generational wealth. By building their own businesses, Native women are breaking barriers and reclaiming their roles as economic leaders within their communities. This shift is particularly significant given the historical exclusion of Native women from the workforce and mainstream economy, a legacy of colonization and systemic inequality.

Entrepreneurship provides Native women with the opportunity to generate income, create jobs, and invest in their communities, fostering economic self-sufficiency and stability. Moreover, these businesses often reflect cultural values and traditions, offering products and services that celebrate Indigenous identity and heritage. By supporting Native women entrepreneurs, NAYA not only uplifts individuals but also helps strengthen the entire community, creating a ripple effect of opportunity, pride, and prosperity for future generations.

This economic empowerment is a crucial step toward dismantling systemic barriers and ensuring that Native women have a voice and a seat at the table in shaping the future of their communities.

Mentorship and education empower Native women entrepreneurs by providing essential tools, knowledge, and confidence to succeed. Through guidance and skill-building, they bridge challenges, foster innovation, and ensure sustainable growth, enabling Native women to lead and uplift their communities while staying rooted in cultural values.

This Women’s History Month, we reflect on the strength and vision of Native women who have shaped our past and will continue to inspire and educate for generations to come. As we look forward to the future of Portland’s Indigenous community, we understand that the work of these women, grounded in the interconnectedness of our environment, culture, spirituality, and wellness, empowers future generations to move forward, together.
