A Homeownership Success Story

houseBrad and Ben had lived in 8 different apartments in 11 years. One apartment flooded, and rather than fix the leak their landlord would just dry the water. In another apartment, the owner decided to turn the building into condos, forcing 16 people to look for another home. Before they decided to purchase a home, Brad and Ben lived in an apartment just off Lombard in Northeast Portland. They heard sirens and traffic at all hours, and whenever a train would pass their apartment would shake. Their rent kept climbing, and they decided it was time for a change. “The NAYA Homeownership Class helped immensely,” Brad says. “Loretta Kelly, NAYA Homeownership Coach was a big help in getting my spending plan together. With her help, I always know where all my money goes.” Not only did the program help them secure their first home, but gave them better skills in saving money and dealing with debt.  The free-to-enroll class provided them valuable insight in getting financed, gave them books of information to take home, and even provided meals and snacks. “We felt like owning a home was something that only rich people got to do,” Brad says, “We set the goal a few years ago and got involved with the program, and now we’re here.” They’re proud to come home every day, to mow the lawn, and paint the walls. “NAYA’s Homeownership Program was one of the most generous and rewarding experiences of my life.”
